I don't know

The main pitfall we are seeing around us is the claim made by knowers! Knowership prevails in many people's lives and is a widespread phenomenon too. People love claiming to know! Even when asked about any random subject, people don’t want to come across as ignorant by saying that they do not know. “Ignorance is Bliss”, we have heard this, but never ever we have tried to apply it in our daily life.

We have seen people just nodding and saying "yes, yes" to whatever they listen to in any sort of discussion. The reason being, no one wants to look ignorant in front of anyone. The main drawback in this attitude is that you close yourself from learning anything new if you act as if you know everything. Learning starts when you realize that you really don’t know anything about a particular subject. And then the passion and desire to understand it comes into you. This results in you going to the core of that subject and getting as much information as possible.

Not knowing isn't a bad sign. In fact, if you brace your ignorance and accept that you don’t know something, you stand out in front of everybody as an authentic human being. A lot of blunders and misconceptions have occurred in the past due to a person not accepting his ignorance and acting out of a certain whim.

One of the greatest and well-known philosophers Socrates is known for his famous quote, “The more I know, I know that I don’t know”. How profound! He says learning starts from this point. Once you accept your "I don’t know" attitude, only then can you reach a stage where you can "understand." Understanding is a different state compared to knowing.

Pretending is a widespread disease these days. So from next time when someone asks you, “How many stars are there in the galaxy?” Instead of answering a random number, take a deep breath and say, “I don’t know”.
